These wharfs, common sights up and down the New England seaboard, are commonly now in states of disrepair. “Marginal” recycles a wharf made of oak piers and reconstructs a grid of 18 new wharf totems. In a 12’ x 12’ room in Somerville, hundreds of pieces of pier, thousands of fasteners, tensioning cables, custom spacers, electronics, and acrylic tubes were combined to create a collection of characters remembering historic seafront architecture while producing a contemporary park installation. I designed and built a lighting system concealed within the totems that are charged by a photovoltaic cell and transform the installation into a glowing ghostly wharf at night.
